Business Update from Grand Island, NE


GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
The following building permits were recently issued:
* Do All Properties, 3550 West Old Highway 30, cold storage building, $26,600
* BTW Properties, 2705 West Highway 30, Suite 3, tenant improvements, $85,000
* Leroy Kramer, 3485 North Highway 281,storage building, $90,000
* Taco Bell, 1911 North Diers Avenue, $500,000

WORKFORCE.
The unemployment rate for the Grand Island MSA in April was 2.6%. This means of the 44,338 people in the labor force, 43,166 were employed and 1,172 were unemployed. Nebraska’s unemployment rate was 2.5% while the national rate was 5.4%. Last April, the unemployment rate for Grand Island MSA was 3.1% .

 
2015 LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS A WRAP.
More than 660 bills, as well as several constitutional amendments, were introduced by Senators. The Governor approved over 230 of these bills, several of which are of interest to the business community, including:


LB156:
Expand the amount of annual credits under Nebraska’s Angel Investment Tax Credit Act to $4 million.
 
LB226:
Allow crowdfunding the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.
 
LB259:
Exempt the first $10,000 of value for appreciable tangible personal property assessed for taxation.
 
LB329:
Promote tourism and rural economic development by limiting a landowner’s civil liability when allowing public access for agricultural, historical, cultural, and other agri-tourism activities for a fee.
 
LB480:
Comprehensive revisions to Nebraska’s Workers’ Compensation Act with employer-friendly revisions.
 
LB559:
Technical changes to Nebraska’s New Markets Job Growth Investment Act to
encourage more private investment in businesses and real estate projects in low-income rural and urban areas.
